Why collect U.S. rare coins?

Rare coins represent a tangible link to the history of our country and the world and can be fun to collect, research, display and enjoy. We believe collectible U.S. rare coins will increase in value over the long term for a number of reasons:

1. TURN OF THE CENTURY…During the past several years coin collectors have been focusing on an area of coin collecting that has been ignored for a long time; that is, coinage of all denominations from 1965 to 1999, which in some cases can be truly scarce in uncirculated condition. These coins are now from "the last century," and many can be difficult to locate.

2. INTERNET INCREASES COLLECTOR BASE…The Internet has allowed collectors to have access to coin shops on the web where they may not have had access to local a local coin shop before. We now generate 65% of our rare coin sales volume through our Internet website, paradisecoin.com! (Our retail store has been in Paradise for 27 years) The ease of using the Internet will continue to attract large numbers of new collectors.

3. STATEHOOD QUARTER PROGRAM INCREASES COLLECTOR BASE…The U.S. Mint has had its best eight years ever (1999-2007), particularly because of increased volume through its Internet website. The Statehood Quarter program has been extremely popular with coin collectors. This is the first time in a long time that collectors can actually find something in circulation worth hanging on to at face value. What's surprising is how many people are hoarding the new quarters. They are extremely common (over 4 billion released in 1999!), but we've actually paid as much as $40 per roll for the Delaware and Pennsylvania quarters (currently paying $15). Long term, we think the state quarters will sell for less than they do now, but their effect on the increase in coin collecting will be dramatic over the next six years. Many of these new statehood quarter collectors are now collecting other types of rare coins, which has increased demand.

4. STRONG ECONOMY GENERATED DISPOSABLE INCOME…The first seven years of this new century have been prosperous for the majority of people. Prosperous people spend money on collectibles, including rare coins.

A staggering $7 trillion in personal assets are being transferred from the WWII generation to the baby boomer generation as their parents die and leave the majority of their their assets to their children. These people who have earned and saved their money over a long period of time have generally been "tight" with their money....but as these assets are passed on to their children....they will find it much easier to spend.

New developments in Internet and computer technology will continue to provide fuel for the 21st Century economy and increase productivity.

E-commerce will continue to thrive for e-tailers who give their customers quick, efficient and reliable service. Web shoppers will continue to feel more comfortable doing business with e-tailers who also have an established retail store open to the public daily.

The environment will be dramatically improved over time with more people shopping and telecommuting from home.

Most important to coin collectors, increasing collector demand for a fixed supply of collectible rare coins will cause prices to rise over the long term.

Website and retail store sales are still strong and we are always acquiring new rare coins for our ever-growing list of repeat customers. Thank you!

Special Update:

Recent turbulence in world financial markets due to the sub-prime mortgage fiasco has dramatically changed our view of how the economy will perform over the next couple of years. We now believe that the U.S. economy is headed for an inflationary recession—which means that many people will be losing their jobs as the economy slows, while prices for consumer goods will increase dramatically. As for rare coins, over the next couple of years we expect prices to gradually recede, especially for those coins that have dramatically appreciated in value over the past five or six years. This will be due to people being forced to sell at a time when very few people will able to buy rare coins.

This is very similar to what is now happening in the housing industry. Values of homes and collectibles have risen dramatically over the past five years, due in part, to the same "easy money" that was available through the banking system and due to the ability of people to borrow against the equity in their homes. With home prices receding, that ability to tap into home equity is greatly diminished, as it is for those who bought coins with home equity funds or borrowed money.

We suggest investing in gold and silver bullion at this time which carry low premiums such as the Gold Mapleleaf, Gold Eagle, and Gold Krugerrand, and either .999 silver bars or rounds, and 90% "junk" silver coins. These will perform well in an inflationary environment as the U.S. Dollar continues to fall against other world currencies.

We have recently seen the price of gold exceed $1,000 an ounce and although we are currently going through a quite severe correction, the market will need time to consolidate before once again moving higher. The cost of everything else will rise just as dramatically. In addition to purchasing gold and silver during this correction phase, we suggest stocking up on non-perishable consumer goods when they are on sale. They will cost much more very soon.
